The explosion of Jiu-Jitsu has created a mountain of reputable and knowledgeable instructors. Many of these instructor have designed excellent media products to help improve your Jiu-Jitsu. One instructor that has consistently risen above the rest with his exceptional content is Nic Gregoriades.
Nic is the first person to be promoted to black belt under Roger Gracie and is the head of the Jiu-Jitsu Brotherhood Association. In addition to being promoted by arguably the greatest BJJ competitor of all time Nic is known as an exceptionable instructor. Nic is known for his clear instruction and highly conceptual approach to Jiu-Jitsu.
I recently reviewed “Beyond Technique 2” where Nic teamed up with Australian BJJ instructor and competitor Kit Dale. Kit is an accomplished competitor with numerous titles to his name. Nic and Kit set out to make a sequel to their “Beyond Technique” instructional.
In this download, like the last, the pair focus not on specific techniques but on overarching concepts that can translate among a variety of positions and techniques.
The content is broken up in to four concepts, two from Nic and two from Kit. The concepts are: Foot Engagement, Becoming Formless, Strong Shape/ Weak Shape, “Force” the Position. All of these concepts are thoroughly explained among a variety of positions and techniques. After explaining these techniques Nic and Kit take turns doing some light rolling while using the concepts. They stop when using the concept and explain why and how it’s being used. I found that to be one of the coolest aspects of this instructional.
This instructional was useful, entertaining, and the quality of production was very high as can be expected from Jiu-Jitsu Brotherhood products in general.
Both BJJ students and instructors can find value in this instructional. For the student, a conceptual approach to Jiu-Jitsu can lead to an easier understanding of new techniques and can allow you to find your own solutions to problems. For the instructor, Nic and Kit have an amazing ability to identify jiu-jitsu concepts, which can help your teaching.
